Temporary Book Buying Ban

It is time! I surrender! My eyes are bigger than my brain! I am being buried in books. Last month I bought/received for review 76 book and read 19. I am never going to get caught up. I have more than 1000 unread books at my house. I will likely be featured on the next episode of Hoarders!

Therefore, I have vowed not to purchase any books (or download any free books Oops! I already broke this one with 5 new free books yesterday!) in February. I do have some that will be arriving because I pre-ordered them. But I am not going to go to Amazon.com and click my beloved one-click button for the month of February.

Furthermore, I will go through the stacks of young adult books that I have acquired and decide which ones should be donated to my high school media center. I would like to reduce the piles by half. I know that I will never choose to read a great big bunch of them.

Wish me luck at keeping this resolution. (The ones I made in January to eat less and exercise more have already been marked in the book as epic fails but I am going to try much harder to keep this one.)

  1. ME TOO!! I went through less than half of my eBooks last night and put the ones I really want to read on my GR TBR list. Guess what? I have 400+ on that list now and those are just the books I OWN! what am I to do about all of the ones I want - or better yet the ones I LOVE to re-read? UGH! I need help!!
I won't commit to not downloading freebies, like you have (the last time I did there were 4 books on my wishlist that popped up), but I will agree with the ban. I actually started in November and am doing pretty well. I've only purchased ONE book that wasn't a Christmas gift and I've not yet broken out my BN Christmas Gift Cards.
Good luck, my dear!! If you need a kick in the rump or some back-up just send me a note!

  2. Yea I know how you feel, but I don't think I have the resolve that you might have to not click the button. I just got into a new series and I must have the next books so I don't think I could do it but kodos to you for giving it a try. I am buried in books to so I might be on the same hoarders feature..LOL

  3. Lol, I feel your pain. I banned book buying for the first few months of last year and was doing pretty well. Then, I think I made up for it in the last half of 2010. Online buying definitely makes it too easy to cave to the addiction and I never leave a book store with just the title I went in to buy.

Good luck. Perhaps weekly meetings? "Hello, my name is ___ and I have gone ___w/o buying a book."

  4. I have been on book buying ban since the past two months! The main reason I'm doing this because I am in need to conserve some money but am lucky that my shelf is still full with books that need to be read. The funny thing is that, I have a picture of my shelf in my phone, so that each time I have the urge to splurge on book, I'll look at it and tell myself "No, you don't need a new book". Guess that it is some sort of psychology thing and it works - SO FAR!

  5. I just don't have it in me to ban myself from buying books...There are so many awesome ones coming out in the next couple of months. Unless I win them all (not very likely) I'm going to have to purchase them. But, I am trying to cut down on my purchasing by reading library books. Go libraries!

  6. I have been on a book buying ban since January first and intend to keep it until I make my way through this one shelf where I put these specific books. As I have so many other books to review, I will probably not finish that shelf until September, so no books until then. The only thing I've allowed myself is to spend the $50 GC I got for Christmas, but I haven't used it as of yet.

Good luck with it as it's tough. Using the library kind of helps though.

  7. Good luck! I try doing this every few months (no more "acquring" books--even from the library) and it works for about two weeks for me!! I hope you have better luck that I do!

  8. I've been on a "book buying ban" for a few months but can't stick with it. I've bought at least one new book every week since I promised not to buy any more. Oops :P

  9. My TBR got so bad that I've been on book buying ban since Oct (but I'm going to break it at a library sale later this month). Good luck with your ban, hope you stick with it. ^_^

  10. Sweet, I have a proactive approach against such a situation. One, a very strict rule to not bring books into my house unless I know I love them, or have exhausted all other efforts to get a copy to read.

I will say that I am wishing I was your friendly neighbor that could come over and read your books. Surely, you have some great books sitting around I am dying to read. Good luck getting that all cleaned up. I would sure hate to see anyone with tons of great books put on hoarders. The way they treat the stuff on those shows is a bit harsh especially if applied to books.

  11. Good luck with your resolution. I try not to buy new ones just used ones on Amazon. LOL! Listen to me justifying!

  12. I have the same problem. I've tried bans and find that I do better with "get to buy one a week" type thing. I don't have the strength of will to 'forbid' myself altogether. It makes me go overboard and buy a ton. Nice to read that other people have the same issue. :)

I just discovered your site, and have bookmarked it so that I check back often!

  13. Good luck with the ban! I keep falling off the book buying ban wagon, then climbing back on. Haven't seen my dining room table since before the holidays, as it's covered in books! Think my DH is ready to shoot me! *L*
