ARC Review: Slayers: Friends and Traitors by C. J. Hill

Slayers: Friends and Traitors
Author: C. J. Hill
Publication: Feiwel & Friends (October 15, 2013)

Description: In C.J. Hill's action-packed sequel to Slayers, the group of teens known as Slayers have been betrayed—but they won’t give up without a fight.

Tori’s got a problem. She thought she’d have one more summer to train as a dragon Slayer, but time has run out. When Tori hears the horrifying sound of dragon eggs hatching, she knows the Slayers are in trouble. In less than a year, the dragons will be fully grown and completely lethal. The Slayers are well-prepared, but their group is still not complete, and Tori is determined to track down Ryker—the mysterious missing Slayer.

What Tori doesn’t bargain for, however, is the surprising truth about her powers. She isn't just a Slayer, she’s part Dragon Lord, too. How can Tori fight to save her friends when half of her is programmed to protect dragons? And with a possible traitor in their midst, the Slayers will be divided in more ways than they ever imagined.

My Thoughts: This sequel to SLAYERS is even more action-packed than the first book and it is packed with emotions too. Tori has spent the summer training to be a dragon slayer and falling in love with Jesse. Now, the end of camp has come and Jesse wants to end the relationship too. Tori is heartbroken and turns to her counterpart Dirk for comforting. She sees Dirk as a friend but Dirk is in love with her too and wants a different relationship. Since Dirk and Jesse have been best friends for years this damages their friendship.

But the Slayers have worse problems than boy-girl problems. The dragons they are training to fight have hatched and will be ready to fight them sooner than they had hoped. Even worse, they have a traitor in their midst who is passing on vital information to the Dragon Lord who wants to eliminate the Slayers who stand in the way of his world domination.

The Slayers are continuing to look for Ryder who was spirited away to hiding by his parents when they learned he was a Slayer. They are determined to keep their child safe and remain neutral in the coming fight. When the Dragon Lord locates them, they learn how unrealistic that expectation is. Ryder has been training in secret and is ready to join the rest of the Slayers.

I liked the way the characters grew in this story. I liked that they had to wrestle with loyalties and make tough decisions. I especially liked that Tori had to deal with the fact that she was part Dragon Lord which made her sympathetic to the dragons.

The end of the book clearly states THE END but I hope there is at least one more book. I want to know if our young heroes can defeat the Dragon Lord and save our American way of life. Fans of action, dragons, and love triangles will enjoy this story.

Favorite Quote:
"They're are two types of people in the world," Dirk said. "Those who are loyal to principles, and those who are loyal to people. The problem with dating Jesse is that he's in the first group and you're in the second. You were bound to get hurt."

Tori considered this while she picked up another rock. "I'm loyal to principles. I'm fighting dragons to protect my country."

Dirk shook his head. "You're fighting dragons to protect the people you love."
