Description: Welcome to the war. The Tesla Institute is a premier academy that trains young time travelers called Rifters. Created by Nicola Tesla, the Institute seeks special individuals who can help preserve the time stream against those who try to alter it. The Hollows is a rogue band of Rifters who tear through time with little care for the consequences. Armed with their own group of lost teens--their only desire to find Tesla and put an end to his corruption of the time stream. Torn between them are Lex and Ember, two Rifters with no memories of their life before joining the time war. When Lex's girlfriend dies during a mission, the only way he can save her is to retrieve the Dox, a piece of tech which allows Rifters to re-enter their own timeline without collapsing the time stream. But the Dox is hidden deep within the Tesla Institute, which means Lex must go into the enemy camp. It's there he meets Ember, and the past that was stolen from them both comes flooding back. Now armed with the truth of who they are, Lex and Ember must work together to save the future before the battle for time destroys them both again.
My Thoughts: Here's what we have: two rival groups of time travelers who battle each other when they meet, brother and sister who were separated and are now each in a different group, and a rip in the time stream that could end time for everyone. Something about traveling in time erases the memories of what happened before in the time travelers' lives.
Ember is with the Tesla Institute; Lex is with the Hollows. They meet at the Chicago World Fair when Lex's group wants to steal some plans for a machine to use solar energy and Ember's group wants to stop them. Seeing each other brings back memories that were previously lost. They recognize each other as brother and sister. Who they are is part of the big secret of the book so I would spoil it for you.
Suffice to say that decisions are made that damage the time stream and the two of them and their friends need to work together to heal the time stream.
I am not a big fan of time travel stories. I usually have trouble with the logic of it. This story was no exception. Also with this story, beyond the book description, I had no idea why the two groups were at odds or what their ultimate goals were. I don't know if one group was the bad guys and one the good and, if so, which was which. I did like the friendships between the time travelers in each group. I liked the science fiction details and I liked the action in the story.
Fans of action and fans of science fiction may enjoy this one.
