ARC Review: The Giant Smugglers by Matt Solomon and Chris Pauls

The Giant Smugglers
Author: Matt Solomon and Chris Pauls
Publication: Feiwel & Friends (May 17, 2016)

Description: Charlie Lawson's only summer excitement in small-town Wisconsin came from kicking butt in video games, where he's the undisputed Total Turbo champ. Now it's time to go back to middle school, where nine long months of boredom await.

But then Charlie stumbles onto something big happening inside the abandoned warehouse across the street from his house. Specifically, someone big. He befriends Bruce, a twenty-foot-tall teenage giant, who Charlie must keep a secret.

Charlie isn't the only one in town who knows what's hiding in the warehouse. Powerful, ruthless forces are closing in, and they'll stop at nothing to acquire a giant. But Charlie will do whatever it takes to protect the biggest and best friend he's ever had.

My Thoughts: THE GIANT SMUGGLERS was a fast-paced and exciting adventure story. Charlie, who loves playing video games, is surprised to meet a giant hidden in the abandoned warehouse next to his apartment building. The two become fast friends. After watching some old Bruce Lee movies and watching the giant duplicate Lee's moves, he names the formerly nameless giant Bruce.

Charlie and Bruce both have enemies. Charlie is on the run from the new kid in school who has a fierce temper. Fitz has just come to the area with his scientist father who is researching human growth hormone and who is chasing rumors of giants. He is also injecting his son with a serum he has created which is making Fitz stronger but also prone to rages. Bruce is on the run from those who want to exploit him. Fitz's father is being pressured by the corporation funding his research to produce a real dragon or lose funding. He has hired a mercenary named Stick who comes with a wide variety of superhero gear to capture the giant.

Charlie and Bruce take off on a wild adventure to get Bruce to safety.

Middle grade fans of action and adventure will enjoy this story.

Favorite Quote:
Fitz reached Charlie and grabbed the back of his neck with a strong, hot hand. He grinned. "What are you, scared?"

Charlie's mouth opened, but no sound came out. Fitz was right. Charlie was scared to death.

Fitz tightened his grip and pulled back his other fist. Charlie closed his eyes, but the punch never came as a stern voice burst from below. "Powder, go say 'No!'"
