Don’t dig for your favorite book, the coolest, the most intellectual. Use the CLOSEST.
The book in my hand today is Griffin Rising by Darby Karchut. It was sent to me by the author for review and has been sitting on my review stack for quite a while now. You can buy it in the Kindle Store at Amazon here.
Here is the product description from the author's web site.

For Griffin, it’s time to angel up.

Armed with the power to control the ancient elements of Earth and Fire, sixteen year oldGriffin is determined to complete his apprenticeship and rise to the rank of Terra Angeli.

But first, he must overcome a brutal past if he is to survive in this world. Will the perseverance of his mentor and the love of a mortal girl give Griffin the strength he needs to triumph?
Beginning:
"Um...Basil?" said the teen, pushing his dark hair out of his eyes. He glanced around the abandoned parking lot, its rotting blacktop camouflaged by a layer of snow, then looked up at his tall companion. "I think your pant leg's on fire."
Friday 56:
He's not such a dweeb after all.
