Teaser Tuesday: Shine by Lauren Myracle

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

  • Grab your current read
  • Open to a random page
  • Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
  • BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)

Share the title and author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!
Today I am reading Shine by Lauren Myracle. I have this book for review on my computer. It is an interesting story about a girl from a small, disadvantaged rural town who decides to investigate to find out who beat up her gay friend and left him for dead. She finds secrets buried in the town on her way to a solution.
Teaser:
"Haven't you already read that book?" he said.
"Only a couple hundred times."
"Do you
cry every time?"
I sniffle-laughed, seeing how he might not understand that sometimes it was good to cry.
The book they are talking about is To Kill a Mockingbird which is one I have never read. It is on my TBR stack though.

  2. I read To Kill a Mockingbird back in high school. Didn't really love it that much. I couldn't really get into classics unfortunately. Other than Dracula and The Count of Monte Cristo--totally weird combo, I know!

    Here's my teaser

  4. Shine sounds really interesting. I'm adding it to my TBR list! And I should probably add To Kill a Mockingbird, too. That's one that probably everyone should read.

  6. Great teaser.
The book sounds a bit too dramatic for me though.

  8. Aw! What a frickin' cool idea, the whole Teaser Tuesday thing! And I love the quote you posted. Was your pick really random? I was at an event recently, and to my surprise, my beloved and proper aunt was in the audience. She'd driven over an hour to attend, that sweetie. Anyway, we were talking about southern accents, so I asked Aunt Pat to come up and read a random bit of Shine so that everyone could hear a truly strong and authentic southern accent. The random section I flipped to? Started off with green beans--happy happy--and ended with a lecherous methhead with a tendency to get boners around young girls. OMIGOD. I ran and slammed shut the book and hugged my bright-red aunt, who handled it all with grace and dignity. Well, as much dignity as can be mustered when boners rear their shocking heads... ;)
