I am reading A Beautiful Friendship by David Weber. This is Weber's first young adult book and talks about the first contact between settlers on Sphinx and treecats. It is 12-year-old Stephanie Harrington who makes the discovery.

Here is the product description:

Stephanie Harrington always expected to be a forest ranger on her homeworld of Meyerdahl . . . until her parents relocated to the frontier planet of Sphinx in the far distant Star Kingdom of Manticore. She closed her eyes, took one arm from behind her head, and pointed, then opened her eyes to see where her index finger was aimed. The direction had changed slightly since the last time she'd checked, and yet she knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that she was pointing directly at the treecat who'd raided her mother's greenhouse.
