ARC Review: The Last Station Master by S.A.M. Posey

The Last Station Master: A Boy, A Terrorist, A Secret, and Trouble
Author: S.A.M. Posey
Publication: Key Publishing House Inc (February 1, 2013)

Description: On his grandparents remote North Carolina farm for the summer, Nate discovers there's more happening on the rambling property than anyone realizes. To stop a terrorist's plot and prevent a military disaster, he must unravel the clues around him and use what he learns about the farm, the Underground Railroad, and the lost secrets of an old ghost to become the Last Station Master.

My Thoughts: We first meet our hero fifteen-year-old Nate Daniels when he and and friend are pulled over by the police for joy-riding in a neighbor's car. His parents are rightfully upset with his irresponsibility and decide to send him to spend the summer with his grandparents in rural North Carolina. Nate is expecting to spend a boring summer. He isn't expecting terrorists and a family mystery.

When Nate flies down from Boston, his plane is detained and searched by Homeland Security. A suspected terrorist is on-board. Nate and a couple of other kids are released to the custody of those waiting for them. Nate gets home and finds that someone has slipped a USB into the pocket of his hoodie. He also finds that the farm that has been in his family since before the Civil War is an antebellum mansion complete with a ghost and a mystery. Was his ancestor a black slave-owner or was he secretly a stop on the Underground Railroad?

When the terrorist, who convinces Nate that he is really an undercover agent who has information about a traitor in our government, comes to Nate to retrieve his flash drive, Nate believes him and decides to help him get to the Pentagon. He enlists his two new friends from the airplane—fifteen-year-old twins Hannah and Will—to help him. They are children of a soldier who died fighting the Taliban.

The story is filled with exciting scenes as Nate has an encounter with a bear, searches for secret passages in his house, and has to elude the army and Homeland Security as they search for Abdi. I think that middle graders will like the excitement and will like the friendships and tentative romance in this story. The characters are well-written and likable. Nate begins the story a little spoiled and convinced that charm will get him out of any trouble but he has a good heart and courage too. I liked his relationship with his grandparents who have secrets of their own.

I recommend this fast-paced story for mystery and adventure lovers who will also learn a little history as they read this exciting story.

Favorite Quote:
Dad walked the detective to the door and then returned and dropped into an armchair, studying him without saying a word. On the flip side, Mom transformed into a Tasmanian devil.

"Nathan Freedman Daniels!" She put a hand on her hip and shifted her weight to one foot. "You stole a car? Are you insane?"

He shot a HELP look to Dad because Tasmanian devils often ate their young.
I received an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review. This is her debut book.  You can buy a copy here.

WoW: Override by Heather Anastasiu

Waiting on Wednesday is a meme hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine. She has a linky widget at her site each week for your post and to make it easy to find posts by other people.

The purpose of the meme is to spotlight books that we are eagerly anticipating. It is fun to take a look at what others are waiting for. I have noticed that it has expanded my wishlist though. Be warned!

I am wearing my Glitch t-shirt as I write this post and longing for Override by Heather Anastasiu. My wait will be over on Feb. 12. Here is the description:
Zoe is free. She has escaped the enslavement of the Community, disconnected from the hardware that had controlled her every thought and emotion, and evaded capture by the Chancellor intent on killing her. She is finally free, but she is far from safe.

Zoe and Adrien hide themselves from detection at the Foundation, an academy that trains teen glitchers to fight in the Resistance movement. Together, Zoe and her new team of superhuman fighters must risk their lives to rescue other glitchers and humans from the Chancellor's control. Challenges abound at every turn, and Adrien, who has become silent, distant, and tormented by his visions of the future, only adds to the growing certainty of defeat. But worst of all, as Zoe's team fights against impossible odds, distrust and betrayal leads to the terrible discovery that their greatest threat could already be lurking behind the safe walls of the Foundation.

Full of high-adrenaline action and shocking twists, Heather Anastasiu's Override is an exciting continuation of this popular young adult trilogy.
I can't wait to read this one.

Teaser Tuesday: The Last Station Master by S. A. M. Posey

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:
  • Grab your current read
  • Open to a random page
  • Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
  • BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
Share the title and author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

This week my teaser comes from The Last Station Master: A Boy, A Terrorist, A Secret, and Trouble by S.A.M. Posey. I received this middle grade ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review. Here is the description:
On his grandparents remote North Carolina farm for the summer, Nate discovers there's more happening on the rambling property than anyone realizes. To stop a terrorist's plot and prevent a military disaster, he must unravel the clues around him and use what he learns about the farm, the Underground Railroad, and the lost secrets of an old ghost to become the Last Station Master.
Teaser:
He opened the door to Hannah and her grandparents, wondering if feeling goofy every time he saw her would last much longer. The feeling made him awkward when he wanted to be cool.
This book will be released on Feb. 1 and sounds like it will be an exciting story.

State of the Stack (Jan. 28, 2013)

This is my monthly State of the Stack post. It is my way to keep track of my review books and to hopefully reduce the stack that I have waiting for me. I take a look at my review commitments on the last Monday of each month. Please feel free to join in and let me know the state of your stack.

I keep a spreadsheet showing all of the books I have for review. Yellow highlighted books are ones past their publication date that I still haven't read and reviewed. I use pink highlights for reviews due in even numbered months so that I can see at a glance how many I have for each month. Ideally, this keeps me from over-committing to review books.

Kids' Corner Reading (Jan. 16, 2012)

Today I am starting something new. I am a K-12 Media Specialist who has classes for students in grades K-6. I thought I would share (periodically) what I am reading to and with my younger students. This semester that includes 2 classes of first graders, two classes of second graders, four classes of third graders and four classes of fifth graders.
This past week I began First Grade classes with Balloons Over Broadway by Melissa Sweet. We also talked about the sticker on the cover which was the Sibert Award Medal. We talked about nonfiction books and biographies. We took advantage of some of our computer lab time to learn how to search using Google. We wanted to find a video of the balloons in the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade.

Next week we will be looking at the 2012 Caldecott Award winner and the Honor books winners too. I just had a chance to read A Ball for Daisy by Chris Raschka myself and loved the emotion he got in his very minimalist drawings. I will also be reading Blackout by John Rocco, Grandpa Green by Lane Smith, and Me...Jane by Patrick McDonnell. We'll do some more internet searching on our lab day too. I think we'll be either looking for more about Jane Goodall or videos of chimpanzees.

The Second Graders learn about genres in Media classes this year. I began with reading Martin's Big Words by Doreen Rappaport and The Picture Book of Martin Luther King Jr. by David A. Adler. I had read a number of the Picture Book series but this was the first time I had read about MLK.

The kids really liked the pictures and ideas in Martin's Big Words too. We used part of our lab time to work on our internet searching skills too. We wanted to hear Dr. King's I Have a Dream speech for ourselves. Knowing second graders' attention spans I found this YouTube video that just hit the high points of his speech.
Next week I will be reading Joe Bright and the Seven Genre Dudes by Jackie Mims Hopkins and Alpha Betti by Carlene Morton as we learn about the genres we will be studying and learn about finding books in the Media Center.
I also read The Pirates of Plagiarism by Lisa Downey which I will be using later in the semester with my third graders before they begin doing a small research project. Right now they are busy using Motivator at Big Huge Labs to make an I Love to Read poster.

That's it for this week. Have you read any of these?

ARC Review: Othermoon by Nina Berry

Othermoon
Author: Nina Berry
Publication: K-Teen (January 29, 2013)

Description: Everyone has secrets. When Dez rescued a boy, Caleb, from a cage, she discovered secrets she never knew she possessed, Now she's sure she's found the place where she belongs. With the otherkin - and with Caleb. But as the barriers between the mortal world and Othersphere fall, a wall rises between Dez and Caleb, leaving her fiercest enemy her only friend ...and maybe something more. Now Dez must make a devastating choice: keep the love of her life, or save the otherkin from annihilation...

My Thoughts: This exciting sequel to Otherkin has Dez and her friends and fellow shape-shifters London, November, Arnoldo, and Siku and her boyfriend Caleb along with his half-sister Amaris trying to find a way to defeat the Tribunal which is headed by Ximon who is Caleb and Amaris's father. Ximon's goal is to eliminate all Other kind and believes he is on a mission from God.

Dez is still really coming to terms with the idea that she is a tiger-shifter and possibly the last of her kind. She was raised by humans and didn't even know about Other kind until Ximon's people tried to kidnap her in the first book in this series. Dez has many questions about her heritage. She learns a bit more in this episode when she begins getting messages from someone on the other side of the barrier separating the worlds who seems to be her biological mother.

Dez is a strong character who is willing to do whatever she has to if she believes it is the right thing to do. This causes problems both with the elder other kin and with Caleb. It puts major strains on her friendships and makes her seem bossy and untrusting. When she works with Ximon's other son Lazar who is still ostensibly a follower of his father, it really strains her relationship with Caleb. Lazar killed Caleb's mother and  Caleb wants him dead. He can't believe that Lazar really has changed and is convinced that his actions are just part of a plot to betray the other kin.

The group has to stop Ximon before he finds a way to close off Earth from the other world and cause all the shifters and magic users to lose their powers. There are lots of dangerous situations in this action-packed story that will keep any adventure fan satisfied to the last pages. Romance fans who fell in love with Dez and Caleb together will have a much more disappointing experience but can hold on to the hope that things will work out for the two of them.

I recommend this to fans of paranormal stories. Tiger shifters are really cool! The information about real-life tigers at the end will send many readers looking for more information too.

Favorite Quote:
She bounced up and down like a six-year-old.

Skiu lifted his eyes form her jitter-bugging to me. "Two full-size Snickers and two Cokes," he said.

November shoved him indignantly. "Don't explain me!"
I get this eARC from NetGalley. You can buy your copy here.

WoW: Mind Games by Kiersten White

Waiting on Wednesday is a meme hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine. She has a linky widget at her site each week for your post and to make it easy to find posts by other people.

The purpose of the meme is to spotlight books that we are eagerly anticipating. It is fun to take a look at what others are waiting for. I have noticed that it has expanded my wishlist though. Be warned!

Mind Games by Kiersten White is the book that I am anticipating this week. I loved Paranormalcy and am eager to find out if I loved her writing or just her quirky characters. Here is the description:
Fia was born with flawless instincts. Her first impulse, her gut feeling, is always exactly right. Her sister, Annie, is blind to the world around her—except when her mind is gripped by strange visions of the future.

Trapped in a school that uses girls with extraordinary powers as tools for corporate espionage, Annie and Fia are forced to choose over and over between using their abilities in twisted, unthinkable ways… or risking each other’s lives by refusing to obey.

In a stunning departure from her New York Times bestselling Paranormalcy trilogy, Kiersten White delivers a slick, edgy, heartstoppingly intense psychological thriller about two sisters determined to protect each other—no matter the cost.
I will be looking for this one on Feb. 19.

Teaser Tuesday: Othermoon by Nina Berry

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:
  • Grab your current read
  • Open to a random page
  • Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page

Share the title and author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

This week I pulled Othermoon by Nina Berry off my review stack. I received this sequel to Otherkin from Kensington via NetGalley. Here is the description:
Everyone has secrets. When Dez rescued a boy, Caleb, from a cage, she discovered secrets she never knew she possessed, Now she's sure she's found the place where she belongs. Teaser:
"Why would the Tribunal get DNA from everyone else who raided their compound, but not from you?"

"And you're not fine." I pointed at the bruises on his arm.

Book Blogger Confessions: Blogging Slumps (Jan. 21, 2013)

Book Blogger Confessions is a new Monday meme started by Tiger at Tiger's All-Consuming Books and Karen at For What It's Worth. Pam from Midnyte Reader joined with Karen to host this meme when Tiger changed the focus of her blogging. The purpose of the meme is best stated by Karen here:
"Tiger and I thought it might be time to start a meme to discuss some of the frustrations that are unique to book bloggers. What happens when the hobby you love becomes more of a chore?
This meme will appear on the first and third Mondays of the month. One of the hosts will give us a question to respond to and a linky for sharing our responses and developing community.

This week's question is: We've discussed blogging slumps before but have you ever seriously considered throwing in the towel and quitting blogging? If so, what changed your mind? Did you discuss it with other bloggers?

You know, I don't think I have ever considered quitting blogging. Every once in a while I get behind and have to struggle for content but that is more an organizational issue than an issue with blogging and is completely my fault. I sometimes wonder what possessed me to decide to maintain two different book blogs.

Reading is what I do but I really lack a "real life" outlet to talk about the books I enjoy or to interact with other readers. Blogging fills that need very well for me. It warms my heart and restores my faith in humanity to learn that there are so many other passionate readers.

At some point, probably after I retire, I will fold my two blogs back into each other to reduce some of the pressure and because my reading will change. I can't imagine not blogging though.

I see so many blogs that I used to love either end or go on long hiatuses and do wonder why. I understand that real life or changing interests can make blogging less attractive. I also understand that getting caught up in some sort of blogging controversy can cause a lack of enthusiasm. But neither of those have happened to me yet.

What about you? Have you considered giving up blogging?

Stacking the YA Shelves (Jan. 20, 2013)

Tynga of Tynga's Reviews hosts this meme to spotlight the books we receive each week. I guarantee that your TBR pile will grow when you see all the wonderful books everyone gets.

This week I added seven new books to my TBR mountain. I bought 3 and received 4 for review.

Purchased:
A Tale of Two Castles by Gail Carson Levine was purchased for my Kindle this week. I have wanted it for quite a while. Who could resist a story about "a clever heroine, a dragon detective, and a shape-shifting ogre"? Not me.

Seeds of Discovery by Breanna Puttroff was free for the Kindle when I got it. Seeds of Discovery is Book One of the Dusk Gate Chronicles, a new Young Adult series that has been described by readers as "The Chronicles of Narnia meets Cinderella."

Altered by Jennifer Rush is a 2013 Debut Author book that seems to combine thriller with science fiction with dystopia. I can't wait to read it

Review Books:
I got Othermoon by Nina Berry from NetGalley. I read and enjoyed Otherkin and want to keep going with this series. I am a big fan of shapeshifters. This book will be released on January 29.

Crossfire by Laura Bradley Rede was sent to me by the author because I read and reviewed Darkride which was the first book in this series. This book was released on Jan. 14.
I have started to get the Spring and Summer crop of review books from Macmillan Children's Publishing Group. I received Of Triton by Anna Banks. This sequel to Of Poseidon will be released on May 28.

I also received Seige and Storm by Leigh Bardugo this week. This sequel to Shadow and Bone will be released on June 4.

That was my haul for the week. What did you add to your shelves?
