Book Beginnings on Friday is now hosted by Rose City Reader. The Friday 56 is hosted at Freda's Voice. Check out the links above for the rules and for the posts of the participants each week. Don’t dig for your favorite book, the coolest, the most intellectual. Use the CLOSEST.
This week I am spotlighting Centaur Rising by Jane Yolen. I got this ARC from Macmillan. Here is the description of this October 21 release:
One night during the Perseid meteor shower, Arianne thinks she sees a shooting star land in the fields surrounding her family’s horse farm. About a year later, one of their horses gives birth to a baby centaur. The family has enough attention already as Arianne’s six-year-old brother was born with birth defects caused by an experimental drug—the last thing they need is more scrutiny. But their clients soon start growing suspicious. Just how long is it possible to keep a secret? And what will happen if the world finds out?Beginning:
At a time when so many novels are set in other worlds, Jane Yolen imagines what it would be like if a creature from another world came to ours in this thoughtfully written, imaginative novel, Centaur Rising.
In the middle of the night, Mom and I got out of bed, picked up Robbie from his room, put sweaters o over our pajamas, and grabbed a horse blanket from the barn. As soon as we were ready, we went out to the paddock to watch the Perseid meteor showers and count the shooting stars.
Friday 56:
Later in the house, because he had to eat and read his next assignment, Robbie complained about not being allowed back in the barn to see his "new brother."
I haven't seen many books about Centaur's and I couldn't help but laugh at your snippets. ^_^

I've read a series about Centaurs but they only rarely took the half horse form. This sounds magical and I'm curious how it will be handled when the centaur is finally discovered by the public.

Oh this sounds good! I definitely want to know more about this book and the meteor shower.
ReplyDeleteI love the premise of this book and the way it opens with the meteor shower. I'm definitely curious about the "new brother" who dropped from the sky!
ReplyDeleteMy Friday post features NOT YET.
I've always had a thing for centaur's being a Sagittarius. Looks like a book I would enjoy!
ReplyDeleteHappy weekend!
That is a gorgeous cover! I'm not aware of many books about centaurs; I like the sound of this.
ReplyDeleteLovely cover. I love watching meteor showers and counting shooting stars too :)
