WoW: Twisted Fate by Norah Olson

Waiting on Wednesday is a meme hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine. She has a linky widget at her site each week for your post and to make it easy to find posts by other people.

The purpose of the meme is to spotlight books that we are eagerly anticipating. It is fun to take a look at what others are waiting for. I have noticed that it has expanded my wishlist though. Be warned!

Coming up on my review stack is Twisted Fate by Norah Olson. Here is the description from Amazon:
Two sisters. One mysterious boy.

Ally and Sydney couldn't be more different—one shy, the other popular and outgoing—and when a new boy moves in next door, tensions between the sisters escalate. Graham is attractive, peculiar, and perhaps a little dangerous, and both girls are drawn to him in ways they can't quite explain. As each girl's relationship with Graham unfolds, the more complicated the truth becomes—until a shocking encounter turns their sleepy coastal town upside down and questions everything the sisters thought they knew about themselves and each other.

Told in alternating points of view by a wide cast of characters, Twisted Fate is a tensely wrought psychological thriller, perfect for fans of We Were Liars by E. Lockhart.
This book will be released on January 20. Is it on your wishlist?

Teaser Tuesday: Save Me by Jenny Elliott

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:
  • Open to a random page
  • Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
  • BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
Share the title and author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

Teaser:
Just then she heard a loud thump, and the boat rocked. Off balance, she scrambled to find her footing. Over her shoulder, she spotted shiny black whale skin and two rows of gigantic, cone-shaped teeth as the orca again bumped the boat.

Reaching for something to hold on to, she only grasped air as she fell over the Lookout's side.
This week I am reading Save Me by Jenny Elliott. I got this ARC from Macmillan for review. The book will be released on January 6. Here is the description:
Debut-novelist Jenny Elliott’s thrilling romance, chosen by readers, writers, and publishers for the first list in the new Swoon Reads imprint, pours on the tension and danger in an addictive combination that will keep you turning pages!

Something strange is going on in the tiny coastal town of Liberty, Oregon. Cara has never seen a whale swim close enough for her to touch it—let alone knock her into the freezing water. But then she learns something about David that changes everything, and Cara is devastated. She turns to her best friend for support, but Rachel has changed. She’s suddenly into witchcraft, and is becoming dangerously obsessed with her new boyfriend….

State of the Stack (Dec. 29, 2014)

This is my monthly State of the Stack post. It is my way to keep track of my review books and to hopefully reduce the stack that I have waiting for me. I take a look at my review commitments on the last Monday of each month. Please feel free to join in and let me know the state of your stack.

Here is my Review Books Spreadsheet. Yellow highlighted books are ones past their publication date that I still haven't read and reviewed. I use pink highlights for reviews due in even numbered months so that I can see at a glance how many I have for each month. Ideally, this keeps me from over-committing to review books.

I also do this post because sometimes (frequently) review books sit on my stack for a while before I read and review them. I try to read and review books within two weeks of publication date. Sometimes I can't, though, if too many books are releasing on the same date or if the book arrives too near its publication date and my calendar is already full.

I am very grateful to the authors and publishers who support my reading habit.

Next Month's Plan

I still have two review books on my stack for January but expect to finish them during my Holiday Break which lasts until January 5. Then I'll start to tackle the 10 books on February's stack. I am managing to stay nicely ahead since I read and schedule posts at least three weeks ahead. I hope to be able to continue to do that is 2015.

This year I received 229 books for review and read and reviewed 206 books. I would really like to cut back on the number of books I review because my TBR mountains just keep growing but there are so many good books available to review and my will power is weak.

Stacking the YA Shelves (Dec. 28, 2014)

Tynga of  Team Tynga's Reviews hosts this meme to spotlight the books we receive each week. I guarantee that your TBR pile will grow when you see all the wonderful books everyone gets.

Here's what I got:
I ordered a hardcover copy of The Nightmare Dilemma by Mindee Arnett from Amazon Marketplace and was surprised when an ARC arrived. I wrote to the seller and told them that I wanted a refund and reminded them that they were not supposed to be selling ARCs. I got notification of the refund on Christmas Day. I am undecided about whether or not I'll be informing Amazon that the seller is selling ARCs. What would you do?

I read an ARC of The Iron Trial by Holly Black and Cassandra Clare and was glad to get a copy of the finished book for my Kindle when it was a daily deal.

I also got a copy of Starbreak by Phoebe North from Amazon Marketplace. This one was as advertised - a hardcover in very good condition. I hope to get a chance to read it as I enjoyed the first book in this series.

What did you add to your stack this last week in December?

Book Review: Endlessly by Kiersten White

Endlessly
Author: Kiersten White
Series: Paranormalcy (Book 3)
Publication: HarperTeen (July 24, 2012)

Description: Kiersten White’s New York Times bestselling Paranormalcy trilogy comes to a breathless conclusion with a signature mix of wit, romance, paranormal creatures, and a truly original heroine.

In Endlessly, pink-loving, butt-kicking Evie has way too much on her to-do list. Paranormals are begging her to open a faerie gate so they can leave the human world, something Evie’s not sure she has the power to do. The Dark Queen is torturing humans and must be destroyed.

On top of all that, Evie’s prom is coming up. She’s not sure what to wear, and, oh, yeah, her shape-shifting boyfriend, Lend, has been cursed so that he falls into an enchanted sleep whenever he and Evie are in the same room…and even Evie’s ex-boyfriend, the faerie Reth, can’t reverse the dark magic.

An epic battle is looming, and the choices Evie makes will determine the fate of whole paranormal world—and her own life.

My Thoughts: I really enjoyed this conclusion to the Paranormalcy trilogy. I liked this series because there are many humorous moments in otherwise grim situations. Evie is such a quirky character! I love her love of pink and her love for living a "normal" life. But many things are conspiring against her.

The ISPA has been taken over by a really radical faction who would like to either convince Evie to work for them again or they would like to bag and tag her. Evie's contact with the agency is evasive and harried and being tried for treason. And then, the faeries are trying to convince Evie to open a gate so that they can leave this world - at least the light faeries are. The dark faeries are still busy torturing and taking human into the faerie realm.

Evie would be really happy with her boyfriend Lend if only he could stay away when she was in the room. She is also worried that when the faeries have their way and take all paranormals to another world, Lend will choose to go with. She is also worried about what will happen to him if they all stay and he is left on Earth for an immortal life while she only has a human one.

Old enemies - Reth and Jack - are very active in this story. Evie needs to depend on them to accomplish her goals. However, she isn't at all sure that her trust won't lead to further betrayal. Evie has to make some very tough decisions in this story. I like the choices she made.

This was an entertaining and engaging story. I recommend it.

Favorite Quote:
A very small part of me was curious to see if I could use the Faerie Paths on my own now. But that part was very, very small, and all the other parts of me thought that part was crazy and wanted to beat it up.
I bought this one. You can buy your copy here.

I decided to end the year by trying to end a series. I pulled Endlessly by Kiersten White off my TBR mountain where it has languished since July 24, 2012. Here is the description:

ARC Review: Love & Other Theories by Alexis Bass

Love & Other Theories
Author: Alexis Bass
Publication: HarperTeen (December 30, 2014)

Description: Love and Other Theories is a fast-paced twist on the coming-of-age novel . . . and the romantic comedy.

Aubrey and her best friends made a pact to play by the guys' rules when it comes to dating. They're hoping the rules will keep them from experiencing high school heartbreak—they don't realize that these rules could just as easily keep them from opening their hearts and minds. And when new boy Nathan Diggs moves to town, Aubrey starts to think that some rules are meant to be broken.

With equal parts bite and romance, topped off with an irresistibly engaging voice, Alexis Bass's debut novel is one you won't want to miss.

My Thoughts: This first person narrative by a debut author tells the story of a girl's last semester in high school with all the drama and heartbreak that that entails. Brey has had an early acceptance at the college of her choice and has decided that her last semester is time to relax from the constant-studying that gained her acceptance.

She and her best friends Shelby, Melissa and Danica decided at the start of their junior year that they were going to treat high school relationships that ways boys did. They were going to love 'em and leave 'em and never get emotionally involved. Their plan has been working pretty well for them until Nathan Diggs enrolls. He's gorgeous and he's also been accepted to the same college as Brey.

Brey tries to keep playing by the old rules, but something about Nathan makes it hard.

I found a lot of this book troubling. I didn't like the girls' careless attitudes toward relationships. I didn't like that they lumped all boys into the heartless loser category. I also didn't like all the drinking and casual sex that filled this book. It all felt hollow to me - all bodies, and no hearts.

One thing that I did find realistic about the story was that ending high school is a time of great change for most seniors. Friendships change as goals and plans separate groups that have been together for years. Brey tells us that that last semester is a time filled with good-byes.

I would recommend this one to older YAs and would like to talk to some of them about their high school experiences. My high school days are far behind but I don't remember this much drama (or drinking.)

Favorite Quote:
You're probably thinking I should be furious at Shelby. She obviously wants Nathan. But who wouldn't? If I've learned anything, it's that in high school everyone is fair game. If you want to lose friends over it, get ready to be friendless.

WoW: The Prey by Tom Isbell

Waiting on Wednesday is a meme hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine. She has a linky widget at her site each week for your post and to make it easy to find posts by other people.

The purpose of the meme is to spotlight books that we are eagerly anticipating. It is fun to take a look at what others are waiting for. I have noticed that it has expanded my wishlist though. Be warned!

Coming up on my review stack is The Prey by Tom Isbell. Here is the description from Amazon:
The Maze Runner meets The Hunger Games in this heart-pounding trilogy. Orphaned teens, soon to be hunted for sport, must flee their resettlement camps in their fight for survival and a better life. For in the Republic of the True America, it's always hunting season. Riveting action, intense romance, and gripping emotion make this fast-paced adventure a standout debut.

After a radiation blast burned most of the Earth to a crisp, the new government established settlement camps for the survivors. At one such camp, the sixteen-year-old "LTs" are eager to graduate as part of the Rite. Until they learn the dark truth: "LTs" doesn't stand for lieutenant but for Less Thans, feared by society and raised to be hunted for sport. They escape and join forces with the Sisters, twin girls who've suffered their own haunting fate. Together they seek the fabled New Territory, with sadistic hunters hot on their trail. Secrets are revealed, allegiances are made, and lives are at stake. As unlikely Book and fearless Hope lead their quest for freedom, these teens must find the best in themselves to fight the worst in their enemies.
This book will be released on January 20. Is it on your wishlist?

Book Review: Heist Society by Ally Carter

Heist Society
Author: Ally Carter
Series: A Heist Society Novel
Publication: Disney-Hyperion; Reprint edition (May 17, 2011)

Description: When Katarina Bishop was three, her parents took her on a trip to the Louvre…to case it. For her seventh birthday, Katarina and her Uncle Eddie traveled to Austria…to steal the crown jewels. When Kat turned fifteen, she planned a con of her own—scamming her way into the best boarding school in the country, determined to leave the family business behind. Unfortunately, leaving “the life” for a normal life proves harder than she'd expected.

Soon, Kat's friend and former co-conspirator, Hale, appears out of nowhere to bring Kat back into the world she tried so hard to escape. But he has a good reason: a powerful mobster has been robbed of his priceless art collection and wants to retrieve it. Only a master thief could have pulled this job, and Kat's father isn't just on the suspect list, he is the list. Caught between Interpol and a far more deadly enemy, Kat’s dad needs her help.

For Kat, there is only one solution: track down the paintings and steal them back. So what if it's a spectacularly impossible job? She's got two weeks, a teenage crew, and hopefully just enough talent to pull off the biggest heist in her family's history--and, with any luck, steal her life back along the way.

My Thoughts: HEIST SOCIETY was an excellent story about a well-planned caper and about a group of friends with unusual skills. Kat Bishop has decided to step away from her criminal family and has conned her way into an exclusive boarding school. But her side trip is ended when she is framed for a prank and expelled. Then she learns that her father has been accused of stealing a group of paintings from a very, very bad man and has only two weeks to return them.

The problem is that this time Bobby Bishop is innocent; he was pulling a much smaller heist in Paris at the time. He wants Kat to forget about it and stay with her safe boarding school life. But that ship has sailed and Kat along with Hale, who might be a boyfriend if they can ever stop sparring long enough to find out, her cousin Gabrielle and friends Angus, Simon and Hamish plan a way to get the paintings back.

I enjoyed this whole story. I loved the interactions between all the kids. I loved how conflicted Kat was about her old life and how much she wanted to start a new one. I loved her sense of family loyalty. I also loved that she was one very smart young lady who wasn't going to wait around for some man to rescue her.

I can't wait to finally read the rest of this series.

Favorite Quote:
"So who are your friends?" She turned back and sighed. "Local cops?"

"Interpol actually."

"Nice," Kat said, drawing out the word.

"I thought you'd be impressed."

"It's every little girl's dream," she said. "Interpol surveillance. And kittens."
I bought this one. You can buy your copy here.

Friday Memes: Heist Society by Ally Carter

Happy Friday everybody!!

This week I decided to choose a book from my TBR mountain. I chose Heist Society by Ally Carter. I have read her Gallagher Girls series and really enjoyed it but haven't tried this series. Here is the description from Amazon:
For as long as she can remember, Katarina has been a part of the family business-thieving. When Kat tries to leave "the life" for a normal life, her old friend Hale conspires to bring her back into the fold. Why? A mobster's art collection has been stolen, and Kat's father is the only suspect. Caught between Interpol and a far more deadly enemy, Kat's dad needs her help.
Beginning:
No one knew for certain when the trouble started at the Colgan School.
Friday 56:
"Who hit this?" Simon jabbed his finger at the center of the blueprints. "It's not a big list, I can tell you that."

ARC Review: This Shattered World by Amie Kaufman and Megan Spooner

This Shattered World
Authors: Amie Kaufman and Megan Spooner
Series: Starbound, Book 2
Publication: Disney Hyperion (December 23, 2014)

Description: Jubilee Chase and Flynn Cormac should never have met. Lee is captain of the forces sent to Avon to crush the terraformed planet's rebellious colonists, but she has her own reasons for hating the rebels. Rebellion is in Flynn's blood. His sister died in the original uprising against the powerful corporations that terraformed Avon. These corporations make their fortune by terraforming uninhabitable planets across the universe and recruiting colonists to make the planets livable, with the promise of a better life for their children. But they never fulfilled their promise on Avon, and decades later, Flynn is leading the rebellion. Desperate for any advantage in a bloody and unrelentingly war, Flynn does the only thing that makes sense when he and Lee cross paths: he returns to base with her as prisoner. But as his fellow rebels prepare to execute this tough-talking girl with nerves of steel, Flynn makes another choice that will change him forever. He and Lee escape base together, caught between two sides of a senseless war. As Flynn and Lee attempt to uncover the truth about Avon, they realize that there is a conspiracy on the planet that runs deeper than either of them could imagine, one that Lee's former commander Tarver Merendsen only scratched scratched the surface of two years ago. The stunning second novel in the Starbound series is an unforgettable story of love and forgiveness in a world torn apart by war.

My Thoughts: THIS SHATTERED WORLD is the second book in a trilogy. It is also a standalone romance novel and science fiction thriller. Captain Jubilee Chase is assigned to Avon where most soldiers rotate in and out frequently because otherwise they fall victim to the Fury - which steals their minds and causes them to commit various acts of mayhem. For some reason Lee is immune to the effects. Lee doesn't dream and hasn't since she was eight and saw her parents murdered in a revolution on her home planet. As soon as she could, she decided to join the military to keep the peace and stop that sort of revolution from happening again.

Flynn Cormac is one of the rebels on Avon though he is actually a peacemaker at heart. He is part of the rebel group because his sister led the rebels before she was caught and executed ten years earlier. Flynn wants to try to preserve the current cease fire and decides that kidnapping Captain Chase would be a way to force concessions out of the military.

However, things don't work like he hopes. He gets to know Lee and she gets to know him. Despite being enemies, they find that they have lots of things in common. Both would like a peaceful resolution to the situation on Avon. That situation is being complicated by the secret maneuverings of the richest man in the galaxy who is using Avon to conduct experiments on the populace using some alien creatures he has trapped in this universe.

I really enjoyed the romance in this action-packed story. I also enjoyed the seeing Tarver Merendsen again as he comes to the planet at the request of one of his former soldiers - Jubilee Chase. They work together to try to expose Roderick LaRoux and his dastardly plot.

I can't wait for the third book in this series to find out how this whole situation is resolved.

Favorite Quote:
"Oh, Jubilee." My resolve shatters and my hand slides toward hers. She doesn't pull away, but she doesn't look up either, watching my fingers curling through hers. "Hearts and souls and how they break? That's all Avon teaches anyone."
I received this eARC from NetGalley for review. You can buy your copy here.
