Friday Memes: The Cost of All Things by Maggie Lehrman

Happy Friday everybody!!
Book Beginnings on Friday is now hosted by Rose City Reader. The Friday 56 is hosted at Freda's Voice. Check out the links above for the rules and for the posts of the participants each week. Don’t dig for your favorite book, the coolest, the most intellectual. Use the CLOSEST.

This week I am spotlighting The Cost of All Things by Maggie Lehrman. I got this eARC from Edelweiss. Here is the description from Amazon:
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind meets We Were Liars in this thought-provoking and brilliantly written debut that is part love story, part mystery, part high-stakes drama.

What would you pay to cure your heartbreak? Banish your sadness? Transform your looks? The right spell can fix anything…. When Ari's boyfriend Win dies, she gets a spell to erase all memory of him. But spells come at a cost, and this one sets off a chain of events that reveal the hidden—and sometimes dangerous—connections between Ari, her friends, and the boyfriend she can no longer remember.

Told from four different points of view, this original and affecting novel weaves past and present in a suspenseful narrative that unveils the truth behind a terrible tragedy.
There's a hekamist who lives in the run-down cluster of houses behind the high school. Everyone knows that.
Friday 56:
I heard the pastor clear his throat and knew if I listened to a single word this man said—this self-important dick who'd never even talked to Win, who only knew him from the pictures that lined the aisles and looked up at the bottom of our chins from Xeroxed programs on every lap—I would start screaming and never stop.

  1. Great beginning and I love the excerpt! Thanks!

  2. I gotta go see what a hekamist is.
    Happy weekend!
