Author: Roy Burdine
Series: Megan's Brood (Book 1)
Publication: We Built It Publishing (July 7, 2015)
Description: Megan’s life is uprooted when her family moves to a new house in a far away town where she discovers a tiny brood of mysterious creatures living in the attic. As she raises them each begin to manifest unique traits of their own -- one that blows fire like a dragon, one who sprouts wings and flies, and a girl with a hypnotic singing voice, are just a few among the group.
The mystery of where these fantastical creatures come from and what their ultimate purpose might be leads Megan down an exciting path to adventure and discovery (and not just a little danger!)
My Thoughts: This story confused me. Not because of the plot: a girl moving into a new house discovers a mysterious cocoon hidden in the attic which hatches magical creatures that she needs to hide and take care of.
I liked the way Megan cared for her creatures. She managed to keep them hidden and provide them with food. Interesting to me was the fact that, despite hatching from the same cocoon, they were not all the same type of creature. I liked that Megan could teach them things like hiding when her parents were around. I was a little less pleased when they developed talents that looked a lot like mind control which they use to stop a fight at a party Megan attends.
What confused me was who the audience of this book might be. It looks like something for younger readers with its illustrations and large print but Megan is a twelve-year-old who dresses Goth and reads Lovecraft. The vocabulary would be a challenge for either age group - tweens or middle schoolers.
Favorite Quote:
Her frozen demeanor thawed as they continued toward her. She kneeled down to meet them, her arms extended, inviting. One by one they placed their brittle fingers in the palm of her hand, babies reaching out for a mother's comfort.I got this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
