Friday Memes: Of Fire and Stars by Audrey Coulthurst

Happy Friday everybody!!
Book Beginnings on Friday is now hosted by Rose City Reader. The Friday 56 is hosted at Freda's Voice. Check out the links above for the rules and for the posts of the participants each week. Don’t dig for your favorite book, the coolest, the most intellectual. Use the CLOSEST.

When I was seven winters of age, my mother caught me in the hearth stacking red-hot coals with my bare hands.
Friday 56:
"What in the Sixth Hell was that? Are you all right?" Mare asked, concerned.

I stared at the rubble, too afraid to answer her.
This week I am reading Of Fire and Stars by Audrey Coulthurst. I got this one for review from Edelweiss. Here is the description from Amazon:
An atmospheric and romantic debut fantasy perfect for fans of Ash and The Winner’s Curse.

Betrothed since childhood to the prince of Mynaria, Princess Dennaleia has always known what her future holds. Her marriage will seal the alliance between Mynaria and her homeland, protecting her people from other hostile kingdoms. But Denna has a secret. She possesses an Affinity for fire—a dangerous gift for the future queen of a land where magic is forbidden.

Now Denna has to learn the ways of her new kingdom while trying to hide her growing magic. To make matters worse, she must learn to ride Mynaria’s formidable warhorses before her coronation—and her teacher is the person who intimidates her most, the prickly and unconventional Princess Amaranthine, sister of her betrothed.

When a shocking assassination leaves the kingdom reeling, Mare and Denna reluctantly join forces to search for the culprit. As the two work together, they discover there is more to one another than they thought—and soon their friendship is threatening to blossom into something more.

But with dangerous conflict brewing that makes the alliance more important than ever, acting on their feelings could be deadly. Forced to choose between their duty and their hearts, Mare and Denna must find a way to save their kingdoms—and each other.

  1. That beginning definitely caught my attention. Have a good weekend.

  2. I can't seem to get into fantasy books, but the BB certainly has me curious. I'd love for you and your readers to check out my BB & 56...

  3. Now that is an intriguing first line. Stacking coals with her bare hands? It also gives the idea that not only is this highly unusual, but frowned upon, because her mother "caught her." Amazing how much can be conveyed in just a few words.

  4. This sounds like a very interesting book. Thanks for mentioning it.

  5. I've seen SO MANY awesome things about this book; I cannot WAIIIIT to get my hands on a copy! I'm super excited about it! Here's hoping you're enjoying it so far.

Here is my Friday 56, if you're interested in checking it out! No pressure or worries at all if you're not, though. Happy book-ing to you in the near future, and happy Friday! <3

  6. You captured my attention with that beginning! Happy weekend!

  7. I've seen this all over the place lately and it sounds really good. :)
